Tipperary Culture Day

Cost: €90
Minimum to Proceed: 30
It’s not such a long way to Tipperary and to the market town of Nenagh!
Soak in the rural market town atmosphere as you stroll through the small streets of Nenagh — “An tAonach” (or “Aonach Urmhumhan”) being its Irish name, meaning “The Fair of Ormond” or simply “The Fair,” referencing its history as a major market town for fairs and assemblies in the Ormond region. It’s the county town of Tipperary, known for its historic Nenagh Castle and vibrant market traditions that continue today.
Today, Nenagh is a bustling town with attractions like Nenagh Castle, a Heritage Centre, an Arts Centre, and regular markets, keeping the “fair” tradition alive. There are beautiful small boutiques and artisan food outlets to explore and of course a generous scattering of local pubs!
Nenagh Castle is a fine example of a Norman structure, dating between 1200–1220. Its construction marked the beginning of the creation of Nenagh town. There are 101 steps in total to reach the top of the tower. The second floor is believed to have once been the main public hall, while the third floor was the lord’s private residence. What stands today is the last remaining tower of three. There would have also been a two-towered gatehouse, and it was likely defended by a moat.
Country Choice is an award-winning independent delicatessen, café and supply business which was established by Peter and Mary Ward in 1982. The shop is still in its original 200-year-old premises on Kenyon Street Nenagh. However, as a very unique experience you will be welcomed into the family kitchen of Mary & Peter Ward, where you will have a demonstration of the ancient art of griddle bread making — the precursor to traditional soda bread. Mary will share the history behind Irish cuisine from the famine days to modern artisan cuisine.
And you will learn what happens at a real Irish table on St. Patrick’s Day — and there is no corned beef in sight!
