Writing a Strong Nomination Letter

A strong nomination letter should highlight the nominee’s qualifications, accomplishments, and unique qualities. Below are key elements that ensure a compelling and effective nomination letter:

  1. State the Purpose
    • State the reason for the nomination.
    • Be familiar with the award you have selected, and mention the award, and why this person should be considered for it.
    • Nominations submitted in a category that does not match the criteria for the specific award will not be considered.
    .
  2. Introduce the Nominee
    • Briefly introduce the nominee by name, their current role or position, and relevant background. YOU know them. Help the reviewers get to know them too.
    • Establish your connection to the nominee by mentioning your relationship to them and the longevity and degree of that connection (e.g. cast/crew mate in touch regularly, reconnected recently, met through other alumni circles).
    .
  3. Highlight Achievements
    • Highlight major accomplishments, projects, or milestones that support the nomination.
    • Include quantifiable results (e.g. for Cast/Crew Rep nomination: “increased participation in online meetings by 50%”, or for JBB Outstanding Alum, “Founder of humanitarian relief campaign serving several African countries”.
    • Focus on achievements directly relevant to the description of the award and whom it is intended to recognize.
    .
  4. Showcase Key Qualities
    • Describe the nominee’s standout qualities (e.g., leadership, integrity, innovation, commitment to a cause).
    • Provide relevant examples that showcase these traits in action.
    .
  5. Describe Their Impact
    • Explain how the nominee has made a positive impact in their cast/crew, community, the UWPIAA, or world, depending on the award for which they are being nominated.
    • Include examples of their outstanding contributions (e.g., volunteer work, mentorship).
    .
  6. Connect to the Award Criteria
    • Address specific criteria outlined by the award description.
    • Connect examples directly to these criteria.
    .
  7. Add a Personal Story (Optional but Effective)
    • Share a relevant, memorable story that illustrates the nominee’s character or impact.
    • Stories can make the letter more personal and relatable.
    .
  8. Give a Strong Recommendation
    • Clearly express your confidence in the nominee’s suitability for the honor.
    • Use strong, affirming language (e.g., “I highly recommend,” “They are the ideal candidate”).
    .
  9. Wrap It Up
    • Restate the key reasons for the nomination.
    • Invite further contact if needed (e.g., “Please feel free to reach out for more information”).
    .
  10. Finish with a Proper Closing
    • End with a formal closing (e.g., “Sincerely,” “With gratitude”).
    • Include your full name, cast/crew year(s), and contact information.
    .
