Date of Passing: June 30, 2026
Memories
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Hans Christian Magnus, whose life was devoted to bringing people together across cultures, borders, and generations.
A visionary leader in the early years of Up with People, Hans Christian co-founded an international education and culture program in 1962, and then helped shape the UWP global movement, which was incorporated in 1968. UWP united young people through education, music, and cultural exchange. His belief in the power of human connection inspired countless lives and laid the foundation for an organization that continues, now as the UWP Foundation, to impact the world today.
In 1971, Hans Christian established Up with People’s first European office in Brussels, and was President of UWP Europe. Over the next 26 years, he expanded the organization’s reach across Europe, developing six regional offices, supporting programs in as many as 100 cities each year, and playing a pivotal role in bringing Up with People into Eastern Europe, Russia, and Poland following the end of the Cold War.
After his tenure with Up with People, Hans Christian continued building bridges on a global scale. As Vice President of ResidenSea, he helped launch The World, the first luxury residential ship, leading sales and marketing throughout Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America.
In the later years of his career, Hans Christian remained deeply committed to conservation and sustainable development. As Managing Director and board member of the Basecamp Explorer Foundation and a board member of the Peace Parks Foundation Sweden, he championed initiatives that protected wildlife, preserved natural habitats, and empowered local communities and the advancement of the Maasai people through sustainable tourism, education, and environmental stewardship across Africa.
Those who knew Hans Christian remember not only his accomplishments, but also his kindness, humility, and genuine warmth. He leaves behind a legacy that lives on in the lives touched through Up with People, and in all who had the honour of knowing him.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the many people around the world whose lives were enriched by his vision and generosity of spirit.
The funeral will be held July 17 at 11:00 at Jar Church.
