UWP Alumna Wins Prestigious Photography Award
We are thrilled to celebrate the incredible achievement of Patricia Homonylo (’82B, Toronto, Canada), whose powerful work as a conservation photojournalist has been recognized on a global stage.
Patricia’s photograph, When Worlds Collide was awarded the Grand Prize and earned her the prestigious title Bird Photographer of The Year, beating out over 23,000 entries worldwide. In addition, she has earned Highly Commended for photojournalism in Wildlife Photographer of the Year – considered one of the most competitive photo competitions globally. Out of 60,000 entries from over 117 countries, only 100 images are selected, making this an extraordinary achievement. The exhibit for Wildlife Photographer of the Year will travel to 4 continents, and over 30 countries, so check your local museums for the exhibition.

Her impactful image captures the devastating aftermath of bird collisions with urban structures, showing 4,000 birds that died after flying into windows and reflective surfaces. The photo shines a stark light on a heartbreaking issue:
“Each year more than one billion birds die in North America alone due to collisions with windows,” says Patricia.
Urban environments often create deadly traps for birds, as reflective surfaces can look like open sky or natural landscapes. Patricia’s work brings urgent attention to this often-overlooked crisis:
“I am a conservation photojournalist and have been working with the Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP), where we save window-collision survivors in Toronto. Sadly, most of the birds we find are already dead. They are collected, and at the end of the year, we create this impactful display to honor the lives lost and increase public awareness.”
Her hope is that the image doesn’t just spark sorrow, but action:
“I hope people are shocked by what they see and are moved to act by using bird-safe glass and supporting organizations like FLAP.”

In addition to receiving international accolades, When Worlds Collide has been exhibited at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) and will soon be featured at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) — two of Canada’s premier cultural institutions.
Patricia’s achievement is a shining example of the power of art to drive change — and a testament to the lasting spirit of compassion, awareness, and leadership that Up with People alumni bring to the world.
